Engage - A Lenten Guide for Spiritual Renewal: Worship

Have you ever laid in bed at 5:15 a.m. on a Sunday and asked, “Why do I need to get out of this bed to head off to church?” ...or is that just your pastor asking that question? And yet, this counterculture event has become the life and breath of my life. No, not because I like to hear myself preach, but because worship is the opportunity I have to engage with, dwell upon, and express the greatness, beauty and goodness of God. Worship allows me to empty all my yuck, and receive the infilling presence of God. Now worship is more than an event, it is a way of life. Let’s gather to worship at the River this 2nd week of Lent.

Blessings,
Gary Holmes

Associated Scripture Passage(s):

1 Chronicles 16:23-25, 1 Chronicles 16:29-31, John 4:19-26

1 Chronicles 16:23-25

23Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation. 24Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations. 25For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods. (KJV)

1 Chronicles 16:29-31

29Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. 30Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved. 31Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth. (KJV)

John 4:19-26

19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. 25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. (KJV)
